Is This The End Of Air America?

(image via observer)

Air America President and perennial candidate Mark Green is running for Public Advocate in NYC -- his old job -- presumably to make another run somewhere down the line for the mayoralty, something he has coveted for some time now. From Politico's Ben Smith:

"The former New York City Public Advocate, and former Air America chief, wants his old job back, and tells NY1 that he's running for Public Advocate this year.

"Green was almost elected mayor in 2001, and likely would have been if not for the September 11 terror attacks; he's an old-line liberal figure, a one-time Naderite, who New Yorkers either love or love to hate."

Page Six broke this story last month and hinted that Green was running partially to get out of the radio business. "Green has been running Air America," wrote Page Six on January 30, "but word is he's looking to bail out before the liberal radio syndicate - launched by Al Gore, and originally featuring Al Franken - is shut down."

Where does this leave the embattled liberal terrestrial radio network Air America (the AM station amassed $42 million in losses since 2004)? Green is the best owner the station has ever had and without him one wonders if the embattled station can and will survive.
