Congressman Vito Fossella To Resign

Congressman Vito Fossella, the only Republican from the New York City delegation, is, according to sources, going to resign in the next 72 hours. From WNBC via Wonkette:

"Several top New York Republicans said that Congressman Vito Fossella's resignation will come very soon.

"There was political concern about how best to preserve the seat for the Republicans -- questions about immediate resignation versus finishing out his term and retiring -- but the calculation is there's nothing to be gained from Fossella sticking around. While Staten Island Republicans believe Fossella could at least serve out his term (the rest of the year) national Republicans want him gone. Now."

And, from the NYPost:

"Fossella Jr. - a family-values conservative who has voted against gay marriage and backed the impeachment of former President Bill Clinton - saw his political star dim when his relationship emerged following his arrest in Virginia last week.

"When he was pulled over, he drunkenly slurred - his lips stained red with wine - that he was on his way to visit his sick daughter at Fay's home. After being taken in, he called Fay to get him out of the drunk tank."
