Media-Whore D'Oevres: Fashion Week

"The Heart Truth Red Dress Collection kicked off Fashion Week (well, technically, it was the second show of the day, but who's counting). Designers such as Marc Jacobs, Marchesa and Oscar de la Renta each lent a one-of-a-kind red dress for the event to be modeled by various celebrities. The catwalk teemed with stars like Joss Stone (who insisted on walking in bare feet), Allison Janney, Maria Menounos and Heidi Klum, all strutting their crimson-clad stuff for a good cause. The front row belonged to Laura Bush who, for whatever reason, chose to wear white and who still has that vaguely 'deer in the headlights' look about her even after seven years in the spotlight. Anyone who tried to interview the First Lady was quickly picked off by one of the Fashion Week sharpshooters so we kept our distance. Liza -- with a Z! – Minnelli, who had a fainting spell onstage last month, proved that the best medicine is a pair of spangly velvet bell-bottoms. After walking down the runway (correction: Liza doesn’t walk, she stands in place and the catwalk comes to her), she delighted the crowd with a rousing rendition of 'New York, New York.'" (PageSix)

"Moments before the Duckie Brown autumn/winter 2008 show began, a few stragglers found their seats, bass-heavy trance blared ... Even erstwhile Polo model Tyson Beckford, who was sitting a few seats down from Patrick McDonald and his plaid beret, avoided talking about the, as Mr. Beckford put it, 'futuristic but realistic' collection. 'I was proud to see so many men [models] of color in it,” he said matter-of-factly." (Observer)

"In typical Marc Jacobs fashion, the designer was late to his own party (with good reason, as he'd been honoring his friend Carine Roitfeld at amfAR) which kicked off Fashion Week Thursday night with the Cinema Society's screening of Loïc Prigent's documentary, Marc Jacobs & Louis Vuitton, at the Tribeca Grand Hotel. Though the star was late, his guests, including Anne Hathaway, Ellen Pompeo, Tommy Hilfiger and Dee Ocleppo, Lil' Kim, Amy Sacco, Padma Lakshmi, and Sophia Bush were prompt, eagerly packing the tiny theater to witness some typical Marc moments and, bien sûr, his vitamin and protein bar obsession." "Natalia, Sasha, Jessica, Gemma — we all know the runways' favorite girls. But every Fashion Week brings a crop of fresh faces. From a former cross-country star to the new face of Nina Ricci, here’s who will be dominating the New York catwalks this February." (NYMag)

"The American Foundataion for AIDS Research (amFar) event the Cipriani 42nd St. was what we in the biz like to call MAJOR ... The crowd screamed for Roberto Cavalli, but that could have been because there were molte Italian camera crews in town for Fashion Week. When Bobby Shriver spoke, it was with the Kennedy/Shriver eloquence. Inside Edition was on the scene asking everyone about Britney Spears' recent predicament. Evidently, Lisa Rinna and Harry Hamlin, who live near Spears, saw the helicopter swoop down to take her away. They expressed their concern and seemed genuinely horrified about what has happened to her and said she was a great role model in the past for their kids." (Papermag)

"Meanwhile, further uptown at Gotham Hall, a chic crowd embraced the environmental movement. 'This is such a clever idea,' mused Teri Agins of the philosophy behind Earth Pledge's FutureFashion show, where designers transformed sustainable fabrics into utterly beautiful creations. While Agins tries to stay green by using a Brita water filter instead of buying bottled water, the designers featured in the show, including Thakoon, Ralph Lauren, ThreeAsFour, YSL, Calvin Klein, Givenchy, Marni, Michael Kors, Rodarte, Duru Olowu, and other top international fashion brands, used hemp and naturally dyed silks to create their wares. The likes of Carly Simon, Isabella Rossellini, Francisco Costa, and Lauren Bush made their way to their front-row perches, with Bush remarking, 'I'm not going to much this Fashion Week. This is what I was actually really excited to see!'" (Fashionweekdaily)
